Tom has a wonderful way of connecting people. A talent I am not sure he knows he has. This was my second class and it was full of men, woohoo!!. I feel like I have finally found the underground gay men of Providence. Where have you all been? Cant wait to get to know everyone better as the year progresses."
- Joseph C.

I've been attending Tom's class for about 4 months. I was new to yoga and went with some intrepitations about both yoga and being new to the class. My concerns quickly faded. Tom goes out of his way to make newbies to both yoga and his class feel welcome. Tom genuinely cares about everyone in the class and that is clearly felt. The guys and ocassional "Grace" in class are great. We go to Reflections after class for coffee. I've met some wonderful people. It brings together many of the things in life important to me. Good for the mind, body and soul.
- Vince

Great experience, great atmosphere, great group of men... looking forward to the next class.
- Michael

Very good class and an excellent, positive atmosphere.
- Timotheos

My body feels a bit like it was just taken off the rack- I'm stretched out beyond what i thought was possible, but I've earned a day or two off to let my muscles heal. Of the 7 instructors I saw this week, you definitely have the most unique approach, and to see it strengthen and grow is so wonderful- it's a great niche you're finding, as you know there are so few healthy and open-to-the-public outlets for gay men and their admirers to celebrate together.

I thank you for all the gifts of wisdom, humor, and compassion you have given to myself and others.

- Reflections of a yoga participant after our last class

I want to thank you for creating this wonderful environment for gay men. Yoga has become part of my life. And the wonderful friendships are an added bonus.
- Henry

Hey Tom... I wish we had this sort of group in Boston. I practice yoga as well as meditation and how wonderful would it be to do it with other gay men! I know Providence is not THAT far but for a yoga class or a meditation hour it seems excessive, no? I basically wanted to wish you well and say hello.
- Shanti, Paul

Tom - Attending your class and making connections with they guys is a welcome and needed experience for me. Thank you.

Having been a "haphazard" student of yoga for the past 30 yrs (yes, I'm really that old), I have been looking for another place to call (yoga) home. Some dear friends happened to be sharing their yoga experience with me over dinner - they loved the class, the instructor, and the attendees. When I inquired as to the logistics, I was told it was a gay men's yoga class. With disappointment in my voice, I replied that s@#%s, having hoped to share the experience. On cue, my friends invited me to join them.

Being mindful that the gay community does not enjoy the same privileges that other societal groups do, I wanted to be respectful of the group's identity and cohesiveness. After being reassured I would be welcomed, I timidly (if you can believe that) agreed to meet them at the next class. The rest is history. I fell in love with the group, the teacher, and the physical space, which is conducive to serenity.

Tom, is one of the best instructors I've ever practiced under. He epitomizes what I feel this practice is about: opening up to the gentle healing of the body and mind/spirit; being where you are in the present moment without judgment and criticism; and being gentle in all those places where we have difficulty letting go and allowing the creative forces of yoga to take you wherever you would dare to explore.

I not only have found a home, but a family that is open, loving, and has a generosity of spirit that is second to none.

Namaste: Tom, friends, universe.
With a loving heart,
- Donna

I have been a loyal follower of Tom's Friday 5:15 yoga class in 2007 and I am very sorry to see it come to an end. I found Tom? s classes very challenging athletically and enriching spiritually. Tom is an excellent yoga teacher who realizes that everyone? s body is different and that there is no such thing as the perfect pose. He has no ego and is truly there to help his students. I very much appreciated his knowledge, positive spirit, teaching philosophy and music. His sense of humor makes the hard work seem easy. Tom has helped me grow as both a person and athlete and to truly understand effortless effort, for this I am grateful. Thank you very much!

PS: I still think that Tom has a financial stake in the Newport Comedy and Klean Kanteen. Just kidding!

- Tom McCarthy

Dear Tom, I really enjoyed your class at Raffa yesterday. I heard your classes were great, and you certainly lived up to your reputation. I loved the music too! Hope to catch another one of your classes soon.

- Elaine

Tom is the best yoga teacher I have ever had! And I've had my fair share of teachers. His classes are fun, compassionate, inspirational, and infused with his passion for life and sense of community. But, they are also incredibly challenging. He takes us to the point where you can either give up or just sweat and laugh through it. And, Tom is always there to remind us that there is a reason to smile, have fun, and keep down dogging. His teaching style has not only changed my mat practice and made me physically stronger, but has also enriched my spirit. Namaste, Tom!

- Daniela

I was a little nervous starting yoga, not quite knowing what to expect, however with Tom's gentle guidance, instruction and welcoming environment, yoga now seems to be an integral part of my life. I originally assumed that yoga would have only minimal benefits& well, I was mistaken. Yoga has taught me to stop, relax and rejuvenate myself with feelings of serenity and balance. Besides being clearly more flexible, I? m more patient, calmer and have a far greater energy. Thanks Tom!

- Carl DellaGrotta

Vinyasa yoga class focuses on the breath while increasing flexibility. Tom's class adds something a little unique into the mix. Vinyasa yoga has no 'set in stone' rules so Tom allows for a wide range of diversity and creativity for people who like the freedom of doing their own thing, within the safety of functional alignment. A pose will be chosen and then it is up to you to make it your own - close your eyes and sway to the music of your own breath. However, music is provided and adds that little something extra to the class. It's a class where you can let go and be yourself. Through yoga you are taught to be in the present and through Tom's class being in the present is so much fun!

- Pam

Hola Tom, Had a great time at your yoga class last week - honestly it's the first bit of physical exertion I've done in months (don't ask me how long it's been since I made it to the gym). And, only minor aches and pains yesterday and today - so all is good! My cats are laughing at my attempts at downward-facing dog, but then they join in. Nice people, and I appreciate the humor in the class - I get the feeling that's not something that one always sees - it's a gift. See you Saturday

- Alec

My body thanks me for taking Tom's classes: every time I leave the studio, I know that my body has performed to the best of its ability. But the physical benefits of Tom's style of Yoga are only the tip of the iceberg. Through practice with Tom, I have learned how to laugh at myself, how to shrug off my limitations, and how to approach both prana and asana with a renewed and childlike wonder.

- Bryna

Thanks for inviting me to the Yoga group. I didn't really know what to expect and I was very pleasantly surprised. The exercise was terrific (I know that I am going to be sore tomorrow... and probably Monday) and the group of guys was very inviting and accepting. A very positive experience. I think that you probably have another regular in the group. It really was a good class.

- Tom

I look forward to [Tom's] class, It's more than just the yoga, its a very comfortable place to be. I can just show up and be who I am. It seems like there's not enough places where one can do that, so THANKS!

- John Trainer

I always look forward to my yoga practice with Tom because he creates a safe and open environment for the group that facilitates growth and learning for the individual. The body toning, and after workout energy and relaxation are an added bonus.

- Arthur

Often during cardio workouts, I have to push myself to the limit. These workouts are intense and distracting depending on where I am working out. But, Yoga, pushes me beyond the norm to centralize my thoughts and connect with the inner voice that I seek during the given week. The ambiance of the room, along with the innovative music stimulate the participants to push themself beyond their limit in a comfortable way. Tom evokes these intense feelings with the repetition of the moves, while communicating to us. Tom has opened my eyes to a new perspective on myself and supports the unique identity of all participants. The thought of attending Yoga becomes my goal to get me through the week.

-Nicholas Bretz

Tom's methods are very dynamic - he is fully active and present in his sessions. I respond really well to Tom's informal approach. His classes unfold in the moment and are not over-planned. You can expect to interact with others in Tom's classes, and you may be asked to appeal to your own sense of humor to get through some vigorously challenging sequences. For those fresh to yoga, you will find that Tom readily offers adjustments to various ability levels and does all he can to get you hooked. For those yoga pro's, Tom will bring you to your edge and will challenge your yoga comfort zone in a productive way. The results resonate with me long after class ends.

-Kent Stetson

I have always enjoyed working out and staying in shape, but I've never been very flexible. So, I was intimidated by the idea of going to a yoga class. Tom's class is different. He understands that everyone's body is different and offers alternatives for every pose. He's a great motivator and a nurturing instructor helping us to feel better both physically and mentally. It's obvious that he truly enjoys what he? s doing.

The class is loads of fun as well as a great workout with good friends. I really look forward to it every Saturday morning.

-John Abernathy

I enjoy Tom's Yoga class for the physical workout. I have noticed my body is more toned and limber than ever before. I have met a lot of really nice people that I grunt and groan with every week. Going to Tom? s class is something that I do for myself, mind and body.

-Jaimie Sullivan

I REALLY enjoy the yoga class with Tom since day one. I feel happy and reconnected with myself at the end of the session and I feel a nice energy all over my body. What I love the most is that I sweat a lot which helps to eliminate toxins from my body. I also want to point out that Tom's enthusiasm makes this yoga class a unique experience.

-John Montoya

Tom's class is a physical, mental & spiritual triad that helps me repair and expand my body and mind as I train for my first season of triathlons and a marathon. It has also allowed me to take a mental break from work, training schedules and everyday chores of life. Lastly it allows me to look inside myself for the hour and a half on the mat and focus my appreciation on things I may take for granted on a daily basis.

-Mike

Before attending this yoga practice for the first time my knowledge of yoga consisted of how to spell the word "yoga" and nothing more. Tom has cultivated a welcoming and accepting environment that all can benefit from. From the moment I stepped into the studio I felt comforable. Virtually every age, body type, and level of atheltic ability is represented here and the level of mutual respect among everyone is exceptional. Oh - and did I mention? It's a whole lot of fun, too!

What yoga has done for me in just a few short weeks has altered my life, my body and my perspective. I notice such a difference in my shoulders and upper back. Those are my stress areas and I feel looser there than I have in years. It's unbelievable to me! Really! I'm soooooooooo glad I found this! This is truly a workout for the mind, body, and soul - one that you owe to yourself to try."

-Tim

I first went to Tom’s class about 3 weeks ago—and have been each week since. The class is great---a combination of workout, relaxation, and “mental cleansing.” I just recently experienced Yoga in the last couple years, but only very sporadically and often felt a little “out-of-sorts” at other classes—the pace was too fast, I didn’t know the poses (--still don’t really) and I would have a difficult time keeping up and really getting the benefit of the practice. Tom’s class is different---the pace is dictated by you!! There’s a relaxed atmosphere and encouragement from both Tom and the rest of the class to do what feels right for you—and that makes all the difference in terms of really allowing yourself to have fun! So if you have been thinking about yoga and want to try it for the first time—or if you are experienced, this is the place to go! There are beginners and regulars—but at the end of each class, everyone feels the same---relaxed and peaceful!!"

Tom is a great guy and a great teacher. I just moved to Providence, and found out about his yoga class in the Options newsletter. It's now going to be my regular Monday night activity. I go to the gym, but generally skimp on stretching, and my balance is not so great. Tom is very encouraging and coaches and coaxes you through his yoga class. I've done yoga from time to time in the past, and I am definitely a novice, but I felt comfortable from the moment I stepped into my first class with Tom. The rest of the guys in the class are very easy-going and friendly. They have created a very comfortable space. Afterwards I feel great - very relaxed, and my body feels limber and full of energy. Tom has a gift for making everyone feel very comfortable, and he is able to allow each person to do what he is capable of doing, whether you've been practicing yoga for years, or trying it for the very first time."

-Gary

When a friend told me about this class, I wasn't sure it would be for me. I'm glad I decided to try it!!! This class is both challenging ( without being too difficult ) and relaxing. Tom, the instructor, is very motivating, yet let's you go at your own pace and knows that some have their limits. I have a very stressful job and this class makes me forget my troubles and I always feel better for it. It's also a great social experience with a good group of guys."

-Bruce Randall

A friend introduced me to Tom’s class, and I can’t get over how much it does for me. The stress of the day is gone, and my body and mind come together to a similar state of contentment. OK, I get “stupid”… My mind pretty much empties… It’s like being drunk… only without the added hangover, and you don’t have to pee a lot. Being with a group of gay men adds a feeling of comfort and belonging, and also allows for a little fun and a few jokes, too! OH, and who doesn’t like hot, sweaty men? I highly recommend giving it a try!"

-Steve

As with everyone I am sure, we come to those metaphorical “bridges” in life, you know the ones that we stand there looking at it, knowing we need to cross over but just can’t seem to get the first foot to move. The “bridges” normally represent something difficult we need to get through…a job change, a long term break up, realizing who are your “stand by you” friends, training for a marathon, a cycle race or even hiking a mountain or dealing with illness or death in your family.

Having recently completed a journey over my ‘bridge’, I seem to have experienced all the above in a very short 365 days in 2004. One day, not to long ago, I was tired of licking my wounds and hosting “pity parties” (they are so not worth throwing) and while attending my first RI Pride I was sitting on the grass reading the RI Pride Magazine. I came across Tom Fronczak’s ad for Gay Men’s Vinyasa Yoga Classes. Totally outside of the box for me to go alone to something like this I choose to move forward then rather turn back to go over the bridge I just crossed.

When I arrived I immediately knew this was a place for me. Tom immediately came over to me and made me feel welcomed. I knew I had landed in a place that could teach me a few things other then balancing on one leg. I attended my first class about a month and a half ago. During this short time I have had more epiphanies that I care to count. Tom has shown me that through yoga (and I like to ad through a great yoga instructor), life can be balanced a little better. Tom, through his yoga class, has brought me to a place that helps me with the physical aspect of my life as well as accepting who we are as gay men. Tom’s class helps me balance my training for yet another marathon that I will be doing and another cycle race as well. I have learned the benefits of yoga are great and physically good for you. Tom adds more then just that, during his class he reaches out to you with his strong kind voice and walks you through to the other side of your ‘bridge’. He lets you be comfortable with who you are and that his class is a place that we as gay men feel comforted to be together. Weather we are in the strong ‘warrior’ pose or laughing in the ‘happy baby’ pose (you need to experience that pose to fully enjoy what I am saying), Tom makes each movement, transitioning from one pose to another, floating on the music in the class, to be gentle and easy and right for me.

If you recently have crossed a bridge or are looking to cross one, think about stopping in on Monday nights…I have not regretted it for minute. I look forward to Monday nights each week with Tom continuing to center me in my training, my mind and my soul. What more can you ask for.

Thanks Tom, I know there are many people that make up this world but I am glad you are teaching a yoga class like yours."

-Ed (The Boston Commuter Guy)

Prior to beginning Tom’s Yoga Class, I had always been very self-conscious due to feeling inadequate due my lack of athletic ability. The guys in Tom’s class are welcoming, open, non-judgmental and fun to be around.

Since beginning the class, I have noticed that my flexibility and stamina have increased. I am more confident in my ability to participate in a quasi-athletic manner and have noticed changes in my physical appearance. Tom’s class has encouraged me to begin working out lifting weights with a friend and has been helpful in my ability to endure longer workout episodes with minimal discomfort.

For those of you who perceive that you are unable to participate in Yoga due to being out of shape, disregard that thought and come join us. You will be amazed at what you can do. Tom is great at helping new yoga-ites feel adequate and leads a class that is very comfortable. I look forward to my Monday nights and feel great after each session! I highly recommend the class."

-Chris Germaine

I have noticed improved flexibilty when skiing and better stamana. In my Sunday Volleyball league, team mates ask which 'secret volleyball camp' I went to over Christmas break! I've been able to block better, I'm more accurate with my serves and I get to the ball quicker. In my Tuesday duckpin bowling, my score has improved and I'm finding it easier to bend over to the floor when I release the ball."

-Dave Hassel

Even though I began my practice of hatha yoga 25 years ago, I had little idea how transformative indeed the Gay/Bi Mens Vinyasa Yoga classes have been for me, and I'm glad to express my appreciation for them. I enjoy our classes' male satsang, where we can laugh about our "peeing dog pose" to help us accomplish those "hot yoga butts." Where everyone's serious intention (drishti) is to get more comfortable in his own body. Regular yoga especially at this time in my life helps bring me out of depression, and neuralgia, which I've long battled. Other aspects of Tom's teaching are excellent understanding of body structure, joyous and humorous intonation, and appropriateness of level of instruction. During his guided closing meditation, he reminds us that as yogis we are indeed athletes - very good ones, too. Thank you, Tom. It's great to have you as our guide."

-Ron Suresha

The benefits from Tom's Vinyasa Yoga Class have been many. Here are some which I have received from Tom's class:

Increased flexibility
Greater core strength
Improved posture

Upon leaving Tom's class, I am relaxed and relieved of stress: the combination of the flowing movements, breathing, the physical challenge and the positive affirmations leave me with a sense of well-being.

Another unexpected benefit: The practice teaches us to "be" with the sometimes uncomfortable sensations we experience while stretching or holding a pose. We do this with breathing and meditating on accepting the pain and letting it go.

I have carried this practice into other aspects of my life including those involving emotional pain.

In my last physical therapy session, my therapist was stretching my shoulder back while pushing my scapular forward. I breathed, accepted that it was for good, and let go. She responded " What did you just do, I stretched you an extra 2 inches."

Another thing I really enjoy that Tom did one week was a creative visualization. He asked us to envision watching a movie of ourselves projected on the wall. He then gave us suggested affirmations while we held a pose. It has been very healing."

- Geoff

The Gay Men's Yoga class provides a great overall workout, including strength, flexibility, and a cardio component that gets my heart really pumping. It has also been an amazing stress-reliever, both because of the physical exercise and because of the mindful, nurturing atmosphere Tom creates in class. I always leave feeling much better than when I walked in! I really enjoy this class."

- Mark Cohen

Prior to starting Tom’s yoga class, I had lower back pain that was developing into sciatica problems. The stretching and conditioning has helped it tremendously. I know the problem hasn’t gone away, but the pain and discomfort has.

Tom's yoga class has a therapeutic feature to it. He chooses a personal quality to work on like commitment, change, or integrity and relates that quality to the poses we do in class. For example while we were in a pose that seemed to be a bit uncomfortable, he talked about an aspect of commitment that might be uncomfortable as well and how committed are we to the pose and to the commitments in life that we make. He often says, "I see this yoga practice as a reflection of our lives."

- Henry Devona

Joining Tom's Yoga class has been a great experience for me. I find that my body is toning up, my strength is increasing as well as my stamina. There has been a considerable increase in flexibility and improvement in my posture as well. Practicing Yoga has helped me get back to meditation which I had practiced years ago and for some reason got out of the routine. Over all I feel more positive and energized in my daily life since I started the practice of Yoga. Thank you for offering this to the community."

- Wayne Cotnoir, Licensed Massage Therapist

After experiencing a period of deep depression around the holidays, I decided to try Yoga, a Christmas gift from my partner.

It was really the first physical exercise that I was getting in a long time, and it felt good to push myself. I really feel that, aside from counseling and medications for my depression, Yoga has been helping me also.

It is not competitive and one can move at their own pace, something I truly appreciate.

The calmness and serenity that I feel at the end of class is something so much more natural than any medication could simulate. I also think that my arms are strengthening because I am handling my 14 pound bowling ball better!"

- A.S., Warwick

I do like the idea of doing something more constructive to stay connected with old and new friends that doesn't involve boozy nightclubs.

The class has done wonders for a 2 year old knee repair in improving flexibility and strength. Due to my hearing impairment and many years of coping skills in staying on top of what's going on there is some need to be introspective, a turning into myself to relax and "hear" my own body. I have been able to get to that point some of the time. Other times, though I am watching to make sure I am in synch with the class which may not be the best way to achieve that inner balance but watching and paying attention is something that has always taken more energy for me than the average person.

I feel that Tom's been a terrific instructor and I do enjoy the class and the connection of being with other gay men who put some value on their health and well being.

Many thanks Tom!!!"

- Jay

Gay men's Vinyasa yoga allows me a few hours each week to calm my mind and challenge my body. In yoga, I can just be. It's a relaxed atmosphere in which I can focus on myself, and although I've met a lot of talented, interesting men in this class, I've never felt pressure to compete or compare. This group of men couldn't be more supportive."
